Don’t Make Gods Into Demons | Reflections

April 6th #37 Don’t make gods into demons. Pema: Don’t use these teachings and practices to strengthen your self-absorption. When we take what we can most benefit from and idolize it, our ego can get in the way of our practice. In practice, we can get become preoccupied with every thought, sensation and feeling that emerges. This provides a temptation to give up the ship, so to speak. Certainly in my own practice over the years I have had this occur. If I focus too much, then there is tension. Too little focus and the opposite is true. It is...

Change Your Attitude, but Remain Natural | Reflections

Change Your Attitude, but Remain Natural | Reflections

April 5th #24 Change your attitude, but remain natural.Pema: Work on reversing your caught-up, self-important attitude and remain relaxed in this process. Instead of always being caught in a prison of self-absorption, look out and express gentleness to all things. Then just relax. The words “but remain natural” is what caught my eye this morning. To be at my natural, organic state is to appreciate by basic goodness. There is no need for self-importance. In fact, most of the day I felt quiet and rather humble. I had an appointment at the pharmacy today to receive my second COVID booster...

Self-Liberate Even the Antidote | Reflections

Self-Liberate Even the Antidote | Reflections

April 4th #4 Self-liberate even the antidote. Pema: Do not hang on to anything –even the realization that there’s nothing to hold onto. This is true freedom as in truth, there is nothing solid to hold onto. That would be attachment. In my morning meditation, I simply heard “Allow the spaciousness to be.” Allowing this space liberates the mind. It is freedom from suffering, freedom from the trappings of the world, and freedom from the past and future. Easy to say; a little challenging to do on a consistent basis, right? It is about the journey, the present moment journey,...

Don’t Be So Predictable | Reflections

April 3rd #30 Don’t be so predictable.Pema’s Commentary: Do not hold a grudge against those who have done you wrong. In reading the slogan first, what came to me was how we all can fall into the same groove or habit when faced with a particular circumstance. It is the kneejerk reaction. I understand that and can be mindful of it. Then, I turned over the card and read Pema’s commentary. Interesting, “do not hold a grudge against those who have done you wrong.” I had to contemplate on this again. Is it not true that holding a grudge is...

If You Can Practice Even When Distracted, You Are Well Trained | Reflections

If You Can Practice Even When Distracted, You Are Well Trained | Reflections

April 2nd #22 – If you can practice even when distracted, you are well trained. Pema’s Commentary – If you are a good horseback rider, your mind can wander but you don’t fall off your horse. In the same way, whatever circumstances you encounter, if you are well trained in meditation, you don’t get swept away by emotions. Instead they perk you up and your awareness increases. I thought that Murphy’s Law would have come into play today, but thankfully it didn’t! I naturally found myself being mindful of my rest, my meals, the personal and other work I engaged...

Keep the Three Inseparable | Reflections

Keep the Three Inseparable | Reflections

April 1st #47 Keep the three inseparable. PEMA’S COMMENTARY The “three” referred to here are your body, speech, and mind. Your actions, speech, and thoughts should be inseparable from your mind training (training your mind in compassion and wisdom). After I read this slogan early this morning, I recalled immediately a passage from the spiritual text, A Course in Miracles. It says in relation to the topic of “Honesty”, “There is nothing you say that contradicts what you think or do; no thought opposes any other thought; no act belies your word; and no word lacks agreement with another.” In...

Always Maintain Only a Joyful Mind | Reflections

Always Maintain Only a Joyful Mind | Reflections

March 31st #21- Always maintain only a joyful mind.Constantly apply cheerfulness, if for no other reason than because you are on this spiritual path. Have a sense of gratitude to everything, even difficult emotions, because of their potential to wake you up. “Whistle while you work,” was the thought that came to mind with today’s Compassion Card. I laughed because I don’t whistle very well. The intention though is to be cheerful as I engage in the experiences of the day. The lyrics of the song from the Disney movie “Snow White” instructs us to sing song to set the...

Don’t Seek Others’ Pain as the Limbs of Your Own Happiness | Reflections

March 30th #38 – Don’t seek others’ pain as the limbs of your own happiness. Don’t build your happiness on the suffering of others. At first with this thought today I was quick to recall those who built their happiness on my pain. One by one, each entered my mind as I catalogued the hurts, slings, and arrows into my heart and how they succeeded in my suffering and their happiness. Each time this arose in my mind throughout the day, I held gently and kindly the emotions that would appear in my heart. I practiced RAIN (Recognize, Allow, Investigate,...

Don’t Expect Applause | Reflections

Don’t Expect Applause | Reflections

Yesterday I received Pema Chödrön’s Compassion Cards. This practice is lojong (mind-training slogans) which are powerful reminders on how to awaken our hearts and is mentioned in her book “The Places That Scare You.” They are also found in “The Compassion Book.” You choose the cards at random, and I chose the last card #59 today. You pick the slogan, read the commentary, and then try to live by the meaning of the slogan throughout the day. If it feels right, I may journal or write a blog post on my site about it at the end of each day....
